Giovanni Antonio Canal (Canaletto) werd op 7. Oktober in Venetië geboren. Zijn eerste opleiding kreeg hij van zijn vader Benedetto Canal, een theater schilder..
Canaletto werd geselecteerd als Veduto schilder (ital. „veduta“ – „uitzicht“. Is een stroming binnen de landschap schilderkunst die realistische stadsgezichten schildert).
De nauwkeurigheid in zijn schilderijen heeft hij gemaakt met behulp van de Camera Obscura. Deze Camera Obscura speelt met de menselijke waarneming en werd gebruikt om verre objecten wat wazig en verkleurd te maken.
Het bijzondere aan Canaletto was, dat hij hoofdzakelijk in de natuur schilderde. Terwijl zijn collega's vrijwel allemaal vanuit een studio werkte.
Na zijn terugkeer uit Rome in begon hij met zijn indrukwekkende collectie schilderijen die uiterst precies waren. Het licht was verbluffend realistisch, dusdanig dat de sfeer zeer realistisch werd weergegeven.

De praktische voetgangersbrug steekt in V-vorm boven het water zodat hoog bepakte boten er makkelijk onderdoor kunnen. Met de Westminster brug, geschilderd in telt de grote sier en het feestelijke.
